Deng Qingyu knew that Shu Nian had always been a very sensible child.

When she decided to divorce Shu Gaolin, Shu Nian was less than twelve years old and because of it, she cried, only once though. It was like she was afraid to make it even harder for both parties so she didn’t mention it anymore.

When other children went through their rebellious period, Shu Nian had always been obedient. She went to school alone, walked home alone and learned to play by herself as well. Except for some small things, Deng Qingyu never needed to worry about her.

When she remarried, Shu Nian didn’t complain at all and was supportive right from the beginning.

Her daughter was the greatest treasure given to her by the heavens.

In the past, when Shu Nian was finding it difficult to endure, Deng Qingyu clearly knew that her thoughts and actions were wrong but she was worried that other people would find out about Shu Nian’s worsening mental health.

She was afraid the others would say Shu Nian was a madwoman or a psycho.

Deng Qingyu felt that her daughter wouldn’t be able to stand hearing such words.

Therefore, if Shu Nian didn’t mention it herself then Deng Qingyu wouldn’t take the initiative to take her to see a doctor either.

But because of that thought, she almost lost her daughter.

Deng Qingyu wouldn’t let herself make another mistake like that again.

“Niannian.” Deng Qingyu considered her words and slowly said: “Uncle Wang’s thoughts are that you have already graduated from university and are not so young that you need to spend your parent’s money. He also thinks that it’s too expensive to see a psychologist.”

“…” Shu Nian was silent for a bit. “I know.”

“But how could he?” Because of her condition, Deng Qingyu never told her those things before. “His son has to be sent to the hospital for a cough but when I give my daughter money to see a doctor, it becomes burning money?”

Shu Nian didn’t expect her to say that and looked up.

“I have never treated Wang Linxi badly.” Deng Qingyu’s tone was harsh. “He’s in his second year of high school but I still drop and pick him up from school. I buy him what he likes to eat, drink and wear. I treat Wang Hao’s son as my own son but how does he treat my daughter?”

“…”

“Why…” Deng Qingyu seemed to be unable to say anything more. Her anger gradually dissipated and her voice choked up. “Niannian, you should talk to your mother, you don’t need to bear everything alone.”

Seeing her tears, Shu Nian was a little overwhelmed: “I am not sad…”

“Really? But mother doesn’t want you to suffer any more grievances.” Deng Qingyu used a tissue to wipe away her tears. “The reason why I remarried was because I was tired and I wanted to live better too but the premise of all that is for you to have a good life.”

Shu Nian didn’t know what to say.

“Wang Hao hasn’t mentioned this matter to me anymore. I told him to get a divorce if he is unwilling.” Deng Qingyu was nearly 50 years old. The long hair tucked behind her ears revealed several white hairs. “This isn’t that difficult to solve.”

Shu Nian’s eyes were a little sour: “Don’t you think that I’m always dragging you down?”

“What are you talking about?” Deng Qingyu wasn’t very happy to hear her say such words. “If I feel like I’m being dragged down then it’s because Wang Hao has been preventing me from taking care of my daughter.

“…”

Deng Qingyu was very serious: “To me, you are the most important thing.”

Deng Qingyu in the past had a bad temper and would often lose her temper at everything but after Shu Nian became ill, her whole personality changed. Her words weren’t like before, always slightly biting.

She became gentle, good-tempered and extra patient when doing things.

Shu Nian hadn’t seen her act that way in a long time.

Because of Deng Qingyu’s words, her mood stabilised.

Deng Qingyu knew that Shu Nian had to go to the recording studio in a bit and didn’t continue to consume her time. When she finished eating the noodles, Deng Qingyu sang her the birthday song and then the two of them ate the cake together.

Shu Nian went back to her room to change her clothes. After thinking about it, she took the bag on the bedside table on the way out.

Deng Qingyu put the remaining cake in the refrigerator.

When Shu Nian came out, they left together.

" "

As soon as she got downstairs, she noticed a car parked there.

It was Xie Ruhe’s car.

Shu Nian hesitated and told Deng Qingyu. “Mum, my friend seems to have come here.”

“Where are they?”

“That’s their car.” Shu Nian pointed to the car. “I’ll go and take a look? Wait here for me.”

It was rare to hear the word “friend” from Shu Nian. Deng Qingyu was a little happy and immediately waved her hand: “No, your friend probably wants to ask you for something. I’m going to buy something nearby and it’s not in the same direction as you anyways so I’ll just go first.”

Shu Nian responded in a low voice: “Then be careful on your way.”

Having said that, Deng Qingyu stood where she was for a while and looked in the direction Shu Nian was walking in.

As Shu Nian got closer, the window in the back seat fell down and there was a man sitting inside. She wasn’t too far away so Deng Qingyu could see the appearance of the man.

His eyebrows were extremely beautiful with a slim figure and a temperament that looked solemn and cool. When he looked at Shu Nian, although his expression didn’t change much, his eyes did soften.

She didn’t know what the two of them said.

But Shu Nian turned her head and looked at Deng Qingyu. She waved her hand to her from afar.

Deng Qingyu smiled and nodded at her.

Then, Shu Nian got into the car.

Deng Qingyu didn’t stay there anymore. She turned her head and walked to the exit of the community. She thought back to that man’s appearance again and felt that he was oddly familiar.

After taking a few steps, she suddenly remembered.

That was Xie Ji and Ji Xiangning’s son.

Xie Ruhe.

If you’re wondering why Deng Qingyu was scared of others calling Shu Nian a manic or crazy is because in Asian culture, people with mental illnesses are looked down upon and almost segregated from society. People with depression, anxiety or trauma are too scared to get treatment because it’s considered an embarrassment. Parents may also see the signs in their children but brush it off because they don’t want to deal with the stigma that comes with it. I don’t think it’s as bad as it used to be though and that people are becoming more accepting and aware of mental illnesses now.
