An Inevitable Fate?

Chapter 46 - 46: There's no future for us. (9)

Darren found it odd when he heard about the special treatment. It clearly was not that simple. Still, he didn't raise his doubts. He just sat there, as the girls started to pick dresses.

Jane was the first one who selected a dress. She went behind the curtains to try. It was a light baby-pink colored full-length sleeveless gown with a deep-V neck. It fit her perfectly.

When she saw in the mirror, she felt like it was too girly. But she needed to look like one on that day.

When she came out, everyone complimented her.

"You look great." Rachel tried hard not to laugh at her. It was not Jane's style at all.

Jane narrowed her eyes.

Crysta burst out laughing, clutching her stomach.

"What? Is it that bad?" Jane asked impatiently.

"Are you kidding me? You look like one aimless pink bundle, floating everywhere. Haha!"

Rachel lost it and joined Crysta who was laughing like a madwoman.

"Right? I think so too." Jane pouted.

Crysta was about to ask her, why did she select that, but Jane answered her question before she could voice out.

"Mom warned me not to buy the dresses which would look like I have come to the disco-party. She said that I should look more feminine."

Jane recalled what her mother had told.

'Don't you dare buy the beggar's clothes for thousands of dollars for the function. It's a business banquet, not one of your let's-get-drunk or party-hard kind of a thing. Be a girl at least for a day. No, a few hours.'

"You look great in that." Darren genuinely complimented her. Though she was a straight-forward and sharp-tongue girl, he liked her as his little sister. He had seen her from her childhood.

"See? Brother-in-law said it looks great. I will buy this." She was grateful for Darren. At least he supported her.

Rachel just shook her head and went to select the dress. On the other hand, Crysta picked up a bright red-colored dress, which was backless. The hem of the dress ended up right at her calves. It looked really pretty as well as bold. It resembled her character perfectly.

Just as she came out wearing that, everyone gave thumbs-up to her.

"No one else could have handled that dress better than you." Rachel said, for which, others nodded in agreement.

"I know. Tell me something which I don't know. Now, did you select yours?" Crysta asked while flipping her hair.

"Mm, I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?" Crysta turned back from the mirror.

"I couldn't select one." Just as she finished her sentence, the door to the private room got opened and Nichole entered.

"You didn't like any?" He had heard her when he entered.

"Not like that. Every dress is beautiful. But, its's just that-"

"I understand. Go home, I will send you a perfect dress to your door in two days." There was no doubt that he wouldn't.

Rachel knew that she could trust him, blindly. She nodded to him and got ready to leave.

"What about you, Mr. Darren?" Nichole raised his eyebrows.

'He knows me?' Darren thought.

"Do you mind if I ask for a couple's outfit?" Everyone got shocked when they heard Rachel asking for a couple's outfit. Especially, Crysta!

"Couple's dress? Got it."

Nichole asked Darren to give measurements for the suit and left from there.

Once everything was settled, they made their way towards the parking lot. Crysta and Jane were walking in the front, while Rachel was walking beside Darren.

Darren, after thinking for a few seconds, he reached for her hand. She lifted her head and stared at him.

"Thank you. I really appreciate it." He gently squeezed her hand. He was over the moon as this was the very first time, Rachel had volunteered to acknowledge their relationship.

Rachel just smiled.

"I had thought that I would be attending the banquet as one of the businessmen. But now, I'm not."

Rachel's face crumpled up with confusion. What did he mean by 'not attending now?'

"I will be attending it with you, as your fiance, as in your future husband."

He smiled sweetly.

His smile looked even more gorgeous under the street lights. He stood tall in front of her, holding her hands, expecting nothing in return.

This made her feel even guiltier towards him. Just a few hours back, she had decided to give her best for the sake of her parents. But the man, standing in front, made it difficult by treating her even better than the day before.
