Entering the City Gates (1)

Zheng Wan truly did not know.

The dream only revolved around Cui Wang, and the parts after the mortal realm arc were especially blurry. She had swallowed it whole without thought, and there was a lot that she couldn’t understand. She only knew that Cui Wang flew around with his sword, going on explorations everywhere. Oh, in addition to explorations, there were also countless female cultivators who admired and adored him——

As for something like sect selections, she had no impression at all.

However, she could guess that it was probably something like the headmaster of an academy recruiting new disciples. Zheng Wan contemplated the gold, silver and jade she had brought with her, worrying about the fee.

“Fee?” The white-shirted youth and the child looked at each other, then said in unison, “What fee?”

“The valuables given to the master by the new disciple.”

“……”

The white-shirted youth looked strangely at the woman in front of him. She didn’t look very old, but was extremely beautiful. Especially so was that pair of watery eyes that naturally carried some affection when they looked at you.

But as beautiful as the dress was, it was only a mortal object. She was unable to cast any formations, and her cultivation level wasn’t high either—she was a cultivator who had just begun on her journey.

“I’m guessing you’ve been cultivating in seclusion. There’s no need for new disciples to offer any valuables in our sects, and we would even distribute cultivation items regularly. However,” the youth man’s expression grew solemn, “Once you enter a sect, you’ll be in the sect for life. Everybody has the right to punish one who betrays the sect.”

Zheng Wan nodded. This was stricter than the doctrine of the academies of the mortal realm. No wonder they didn’t need to pay any fee; instead, they paid back with themselves.

“Are these three the little immortal’s servants?”

The white-shirted youth looked at them curiously, but felt that with their heads held high and chests puffed out, these three didn’t seem quite the same as the mortals here. “You’re on the wrong path, you have to hurry and get on that path.”

Zheng Wan did not understand and shook her head.

“They’re not servants, they are my father and mother, and… a friend.”

The white-shirted youth rubbed his nose.

“Little immortal, can you see the two paths leading to the white marble columns?”

Baffled, Zheng Wan looked over; upon a closer look, there were indeed two paths before the two white marble columns.

One bright was as bright as the rising sun, while the other was dim as the light of a firefly. The attitudes and attire of the people on the two different paths were also very different.

Those on the left all exuded a cultivators’ aura, while those on the right shrunk into themselves, hunched over.

“The path on the left is the cultivators’ path, the one on the right is the mortals’ path. You must not go on the wrong paths, otherwise, you won’t be able to enter the city.”

The little boy also nodded, and asked Zheng Zai, Madam Wang, and Ji Wang Li Jin to quickly step onto the other path. The two of them had kind faces, yet, when they spoke about mortals, it was as if they had spoken about country chickens and rural dogs.

Zheng Zhai, Madam Wang and Li Jin could only part ways to walk along the other path, moving forward slowly behind the people in front.

As Zheng Wan watched, the jubilation she had been feeling from having come to the Upper Realms seemed to suddenly drop a notch. She never expected that the line between mortals and cultivators would be so clear in the Upper Realms, to the extent that even entering the city was separated into two paths.

The white-shirted youth was oblivious to her worries and was still going on about how good Yunshui Sect was. Unexpectedly, the little boy punctured through his spiel in a single sentence, “Your Yunshui Sect is just a small sect in a corner, there’s not even anyone in the Accomplisher stage, how can you boast so much.”

The youth became angry, “What’s so good about your Zixia Sect then? Your sect leader just passed on a few days ago, and the highest cultivation level amongst you is only at the Centering stage. If it weren’t because your numbers are waning, why would you be squatting here with me to hunt for new recruits?”

Only then did Zheng Wan understand why they had chosen her.

According to her age, even though she wasn’t yet very old, when compared to the cultivators in the Heavenly Realms who have been training since young after having their vital roots assessed, she was akin to those old maids in the capital who have not married though they have come of age; their qualifications were limited——

And that was why these desperate sects would dare come to dupe her.

She stepped onto the cultivator path and smiled at the two of them. “I’m sorry, I’d still like to wait till the various major sects hold their selections and give it a try then.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Her smile caused the white-shirted youth to blush. He scratched the back of his head, “If the little immortal doesn’t get selected, you may come to my Yunshui Sect then.”

The corners of Zheng Wan’s lips curved up.

In a moment, she arrived at the foot of the white marble column.
