A Second Life

Chapter 1 - 1. Entrance Exam

February 26th, just another day. The orphanage started like usual. No apparent differences. Except for one girl and her caretaker. It would be a very notable day for the girl.

Sumire packed her lunch and all the other necessities. She was prepared for the day.

"Did you pack everything, jacket? Is this jacket okay, you should borrow-"

"Sakaki-san, everything is fine. You must not panic, okay?"

"Okay, dear. But try your best, don't be afraid and-"

"Everything will be absolutely fine, you don't have to worry."

"Sigh...you're right. Go carefully, kid. Do your best and make me proud…"

"Definitely."

Sakaki Hisana's sight followed the girl's graceful figure until it was no longer visible. She somehow felt nostalgic...the little girl grew up very quickly, she thought.

Before long, Sumire reached her intended destination. U A High School.

'Finally here.' Sumire thought. 'The written exam would begin soon, so I should hurry up.'

She was right indeed. She reached the hall and sat snugly on her designated seat.

Someone distributed the exam papers, and the exam begins.

Sumire glanced at the question paper. The contents made her smile.

'It's way easier than I expected.'

She quickly filled the answers and promptly handed out the papers, walked out of the room. It caused a minor disturbance among other examinees. They were little astonished at how quickly she finished her test.

'She finished so fast...I should also hurry up.' A green broccoli and few others thought.

'Hmph...A show off.' An ash blond and a few mused.

'Must've not known a single thing!' the majority believed this.

Regardless of their thoughts, the girl didn't mind a thing. She peacefully surveyed the campus of the school she'd be attending, every possible corner, unnoticed by all the staff in UA.

She even had her lunch in one of the training grounds… Later, Sumire followed the mob of youngsters to the auditorium and took a seat. Nothing amiss and no one noticed, except for Nezu…who observed all the rules the girl had broken...y

Present Mic greeted everyone zealously and silence was returned...subsequently he explained the practical exam. Sumire listened soberly to everything, though she looked like she was sleeping. A boy asked an obvious doubt and Mic stated the further details, urging everyone to get prepared for the exam.

'Robots. That would be easy too.'

Sumire was overjoyed, the practical test was gonna be easy for her. She got changed and went to the testing area. It really was a replica of the city, rather a huge one. Everybody gathered outside, typically waiting for 'start' signal. A loud voice did that, the start signal.

"AAND START!!!" the booming voice announced.

It struck everyone off guard.

"WHAT'S THE MATTER?! THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A COUNTDOWN IN A REAL BATTLE! RUN! RUUN!!"

"CONSIDER THE BATON TOSSED!"

That was all it took for everyone to race into the arena, except for Sumire. She started right away after the 'start' signal and dashed in, just that no one was able to her.

The brief time she lived as a shinigami would be to no avail if even a bunch of teenagers could perceive her movements…

She stealthily entered the core part of the city within the matter of seconds. Multiple red glares instantly surrounded her. They represent the one pointers.

"TARGET-LOCKED. MURDER." the machines echoed.

Sumire blinked, keenly observing the robot in front of her. Just as the metal giant was too close for her safety, she disappeared. She then reappeared at the back of the robot and simply slashed a thick cable with a piece of sharp metal-scrap she previously picked, ending the villain bot. She did the same with the rest, easily gaining 6 points.

"That was rather easy." Sumire couldn't help but comment.

Elsewhere, the judges in the monitoring room were speechless.

The girl instantly gained their interest when she dashed right away after the commencement of the exam, waiting for no further instructions.

'Nice speed.'

'No hesitation at all.'

'Quick thinking and perfect execution of orders.'

'A good seedling.'

So far, it was okay, there had been many gifted students who showed such performances, so the longtime pro heros weren't that flagabastered, yet.

They observed her movements with great interest, but quickly lost it when she dived right into the middle of the city, where the density of the obstacles was relatively high. Gently shaking their heads, some thought she was foolish, some overconfident. Simply put, their previous impression changed, well except for one.

'She doesn't look like the foolish type, neither someone who overestimate themselves...let's watch a bit more.' A drained man concluded and continued monitoring her. He could assess the rest of the applicants' test later, she was much more amusing.

He wasn't wrong. There was more to see in Sumire.

Few seconds after she entered the core part and surrounded by the robots, all of them had held their breaths. Some even thought of calling rescue, as she was just standing still, like a classic example of 'being paralysed by fear.' They would prevent deaths, if they can be prevented; even if the school had acquired the notorious reputation of their applicants' death in the entrance exam.

Exactly when the robot was merely an inch away from her, Sumire vanished. Literally vanished and appeared behind the machine and did what she did.

Her series of actions made the judges look like a perfect example of 'being paralysed with shock.'

No one dared to underestimate her anymore. If the decision to move instantly at the command can be regarded adrenaline rush, then the precise execution of the villain bots was no luck. Not if she methodically destroyed six of them in a matter of seconds! Looking back, everything happened within a minute!

All the judges eagerly looked at the screen, waiting eagerly for more. Sumire didn't disappoint them.

She impaired the rest of the bots alike. 1, 2, 3-pointer were all the same for her. They all consist of cables, so they couldn't be any different. Her score kept hiking upwards as she continued 'farming.' U A Entrance Exam turned into a point grinding game, only for her of course.

Sumire's 'farming' left the judges in doubt, well more because of shock.

'Heck! What's with this kid? Hacking them like grass!'

'That's so cool!'

'I should've brought popcorn with me…'

'I wonder how Young Midoriya is doing.'

'Maybe Aizawa was right? Was the exam really too easy?'

Many had conflicting thoughts, but sadly, everyone agreed that this year's entrance exam was a bit easy...the applicants next year should likely prepare for hell all because of Sumire...A pity.

"Really too easy." The girl murmured quietly, unaware that everything was already heard. And the judges couldn't agree with any more.

She walked out of the centre and went to the outer sections where the other participants were there and they were clearly struggling.

Sumire thought she might as well support them, since she had enough points by now. Like that, she helped the people who required help. When there was only one minute left, a gigantic machine showed up along with the cackling, loud voice. It was Present Mic's, by the way.

"Here it is, Menace of Supreme Dread!"

The name made perfect sense. It did spread dread, quite well. No one knew the filler obstacles, the so-called 'gimmick that will rampage when crowded' or simply put 'nuisances' would be this horrible. Panic spread, then chaos ensured. With all the mayhem, the clumsy kids would surely stumble, and oh, they did.

Sumire couldn't ignore those klutzes. Sighing she moved leisurely towards the zero point robot calmly. Then she did what she did. A simple slash is all it took for the 'Menace of Supreme Dread' to fall back, demolished.

All the folks could only watch in awe. She looked like a...reaper...reaping lives like grass...
