Ch1 - Simple Wishes

“Yan Ge’er, is the meal ready yet? Your brothers are all hungry.” A sharp voice with impatience came from a yard.

“Not yet. We have no more firewood.” A weak voice sounded from a dilapidated thatched hut. Smokes curling up from the roof, it could be seen that it was a kitchen.

“No firewood? If you don’t have firewood, pick it up on the mountain. Are you trying to starve your brothers to death? It’s really a loser. What else can you do other than know how to eat?” cursed that voice once again.

The child who was in front of the stove winced, and fear flashed across his eyes.

The stove in the thatched hut was built relatively high, which further highlighted the child’s thinness.

He had an unhealthy, sallow complexion and a thin body that seemed to collapse when the wind blew.

Although he was already 16 years old, he still looked like a twelve years old boy.

A middle-aged man in a sackcloth coat walked in, and as soon as he came in, he scolded the boy.

“You brat, others can get married and earn dowry money at your age, but I can only lose money when I raise you.

“You won’t even give birth to a baby, who will want you in the future?

“Now you can’t take care of your younger brothers, why are you so useless?”

The boy shrank again and said weakly, “I’m sorry, Dad. I-I’m going to pick up firewood right now.”

“Hurry up and go. If you starve your brothers, I will beat you!” The middle-aged man said again viciously.

The boy lived in a world where there were only men and gers living.

The ger bore the responsibility for continuing the family lines. When each ger was born, there would be a red flower mark above the navel.

The flower was the symbol of being a ger, the darker the color, the stronger the fertility rate was.

The boy’s flower was very light, indicating that his fertility was very low, and he might be unable to have his own children in his entire life.

A misfortune that came since he was born, and known by the whole village. Therefore, no one came to propose marriage until the boy was 16 years old.

The boy quickly sorted out his thoughts and cheered himself up. Even if no one married him now, it didn’t mean no one would later. He believed that he would meet a man who like him and care about him in the future.

When the time comes, he would take good care of him, working hard to live with him, and then give birth to a lovely baby.

The boy kept encouraging himself in his heart and yearning for the better future, and then walked quickly towards the mountain.

From the village to the mountain, he passed through a field. Looking at the green wheat sprouts emerging from the field, the boy’s eyes were full of longing.

Because in his heart, in addition to wanting to marry a man who loved him, another biggest wish was to have a piece of land on his own.

In this way, he could plant the crops he liked in the fields and then take good care of them. When the autumn harvest came, the family would have surplus food, and he wouldn’t be afraid of being hungry every day.

At that time, he would definitely make delicious food while waiting for the man to get off work every day, then taking good care of their baby, living a simple and warm life.

Thinking like this, a small smile appeared on the boy’s face, obviously very satisfied and wishing for that kind of life.

However, the most important thing now was to hurry up and pick firewood and go home. If he came back late, the hungry younger brothers would make trouble, and Dad would punish him.

The boy quickened his speed and walked skillfully on the path to the mountain. Obviously, he came too often, but only at the foot of the mountain.

After all, the mountain was a very dangerous place for a ger, who know what wild animals living there, even strong men have to go together.

The boy came to the place where he used to pick up firewood, and carefully put all the firewood that could be used in the back basket.

Probably because people came here too often, there was not much firewood that could be used here.

The boy looked at the way up the mountain and hesitated, but when he thought that if he brought back not enough firewood, his Dad would beat him, and he might not even be able to eat at that time.

At the thought of being hungry all night, the boy decided to walk up with determination. As long as he picked fast and come back fast, there would be no danger. En!

While cheering himself up, the boy walked up the mountain and carefully searched for dry firewood along the way.

Unconsciously, he had walked a long distance, but the boy was not aware of it.

“Huhu… It’s finally full. That should be enough.” The boy looked at the basket full of firewood, and a small satisfied smile appeared on his face.

He bent down and tried to carry the whole basket of firewood on his back, but the weight of the whole basket of firewood added up to the boy’s weight.

It was very difficult for the boy to walk with the heavy basket on his back. At every step, his waist was bent forward, and the bottom of the basket was touching the ground.

It was more like dragging than carrying a basket full of firewood.

However, no matter how hard and tired, the boy did not complain, but worried that he would go back late, and his younger brothers would starve.

He accelerated his walking speed. It just that he did not expect that his feet would slip and the heavy firewood on his back would make him unable to stabilize himself, and his body overturned together with the firewood.

The moment the boy slipped down the hillside, his first thought was not his own safety, but the scattered firewood.

When he climbed back up later, he hoped that it would not be picked up by others, or he would spend more time to look for them again and return home late!

But the boy didn’t know that below this hillside was a cliff, and he had no chance to climb it.
