Chapter 22 – Ririi becomes a sorcerer…?

The magic school in the capital is known for its fine education, but that doesn’t mean it only accepts prodigies with the rare aptitude for magic. All sorts of people aiming for jobs related to magic can get in. I graduated at the top of my class, but I didn’t even know what magic was when they accepted me.

When I say jobs related to magic, I’m talking about people like Sieglinde for example, who works in the ministry of magic, hunters who go after monsters and deliver their materials like I did when I was in school, people working for magic item brands, among many other options.

In the end, what this means is that most kids in the capital go to magic school. Living in this city… No, this world, means that it’s almost impossible to live a life completely disconnected from magic.

“Ririi, come here.”

“Hn~?”

And so, there really is no need to teach Ririi magic before she starts school, but I’d feel bad for her if she didn’t understand her classes.

Classes are made primarily with humans and other common races in mind, so maybe they’ll be harder to understand for a rare race like a high elf. I think it’s better if I lay the foundation and teach her the basics.

I was planning to start back when we were in Zenith, but I ended up delaying it.

“Ririh’s here!”

Ririi runs to the living room and jumps on the sofa. I’m guessing she’s this full of energy at home because I keep telling her not to run outside.

“Ririi, are you looking forward to going to school?”

“Yes! Ririh’s gonna be a sorcerer!”

She nods with a smile and waves her arms, which I assume is supposed to be mimicking a sorcerer. But really, what those gestures tell me is that she probably doesn’t know what a sorcerer is.

She’s only seen me use magic around the house, so I imagine she only has a faint idea of what it is.

“All right. Then I’m going to teach you magic.”

“Yay! And then Ririh can be a sorcerer?”

“Of course. I’m sure you’ll be a great sorcerer.”

She then lets out a strange voice and starts jumping on the sofa. I’m happy to see her so excited about it.

Everyone is born with magic energy in their bodies, except for a few races, but only people who receive a proper education can actually use magic.

Why’s that?

The answer is simple. Using magic is very intuitive. If someone tells you there’s a hidden power inside you, are you going to be aware of it if you’ve never used it? Well, you can’t use something you can’t even perceive.

That means the first step is to be aware of the magic energy inside you.

“Ririi, close your eyes.”

“Yes.”

I check to see if her eyes are closed, take Ririi’s small hand, and stretch her arm forward.

I make a tiny bit of magic energy flow into her, and she twists her body like it tickles.

“It’s itchy.”

“That’s magic energy you’re feeling. Can you release that itchy feeling from the palm of your hand as hard as you can?”

As far as one’s body is concerned, magic energy from other people is a foreign substance. Unlike her own magic energy she can’t perceive, she can feel my magic energy flowing in her body in the form of that ‘itch’. And my magic energy has already caught Ririi’s.

If she can expel my magic energy from the palm of her hand, mine will draw her out too. That experience is tied to learning about one’s magic energy.

“Uu…”

Ririi frowns, probably confused about what she’s feeling. There are small beads of sweat on her forehead.

I can feel my magic energy being pushed slowly, but she still can’t really grasp it enough to push it out of her body.

“The itchy won’t come out…”

That feeling that my magic energy is slowly being pushed continues intermittently.

High elves are said to be very intelligent and great at using magic, but obviously not even a high elf is going to get it right from the start.

“…Let’s stop for today. We’ll try again tomorrow.”

I stop sending her my magic energy, and Ririi opens her eyes. She looks sad.

“I’m sorry daddy… I couldn’t do it…”

“Don’t worry about it. We still have a month before school starts. Let’s take it slow.”

“Yes…”

I pat her head to try to cheer her up, and Ririi lays down with her head on my lap.

…I guess she’s feeling like being spoiled. I start combing her blue hair with my hand, and eventually I hear her sleeping. I was thinking about us having dinner soon, but oh well.

“…Ahh…”

That messes up our schedule, but I smile. I remember someone saying ‘a well-slept child is a well-kept child’.
